Overview
What is the Safe Teaching Lab?
The Safe Teaching Lab is a resource hub with materials to support educators in implementing Safe Teaching as a strategy to increase student engagement, reduce dropout rates and support all learners, especially those at risk of social exclusion.
Safe Teaching is about improving the relational dimension of teaching. Improving teaching practice in this area is complex: it requires focus, inquiry, analysis and adaptation to the real world – pupils, community and school culture. With so many factors to consider, where do we start?
We propose a process of structured observation and reflection. Through this process, teachers can gain insights into how their actions affect classroom and school dynamics and improve their teaching practice to foster positive relationships with students. The Safe Teaching Lab provides tools for each of these steps.
Safe Teaching Observation Guide
The Safe Teaching Observation Guide contains the essential conceptual background, instructions and materials to prepare and carry out observation of Safe Teaching, reflect on the results, systematise and transfer Safe Teaching practices.
Infographics
The Safe Teaching and Safe Schools infographics are a shareable resource. They are designed to help educators understand the model and provide ideas on how to improve teaching and school practices. You can print them out and display them in your staff room, use them in your school’s professional development, or share them on social media. The choice is yours!

Other resources in the Safe Teaching Lab
Explanatory videos and printable versions of the tools mentioned in the Guide can be found in the Toolkit tab. If you are interested in observing Safe Teaching, we invite you to have a look at the experiences of other teachers who have already carried out the process. Their systematised practices and reflections (Teacher’s Workbook) can be found in the Practices tab.
