The Safe Teaching Observation Tool was constructed from the analysis of focus groups conducted with teachers from Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Spain in the framework of the European Let’s Care project. In these focus groups, teachers discussed the factors that, in their experience, facilitate or hinder Safe Teaching. After a process of categorisation and analysis of the information, several Safe Teaching criteria that could be directly observed in a classroom were compiled to build an initial version of this tool. This initial version was used by teachers to carry out classroom observations, after which they completed an evaluation questionnaire to assess the usefulness of the tool. Their comments were incorporated into a second version of the tool. Finally, the project’s National Coordinating Board (NCB) was involved and responded to a new questionnaire to evaluate the second version. Based on the comments received, this third and final version of the tool was developed.
